The Associated Press reported on 15 October that at least eight US states had filed lawsuits against OpenAI. The lawsuits allege that ChatGPT's safety safeguards are insufficient and that the company has given a misleading account of the service's effects.
Particular attention is paid to minors and vulnerable users. The states argue that conversational AI systems may create misplaced trust and sometimes provide harmful advice.
OpenAI has defended its safety features and says it continues to improve them. The company has expressed willingness to cooperate with regulators.
The legal proceedings may influence consumer-protection requirements across the AI industry. However, the allegations are contested and must not be presented as findings established by a court.
