Around 30 AI companies targeted after attacker obtained production API keys
Anthropic investigated a campaign that exploited an AI vendor’s testing environment and pursued access to an unreleased Claude model, without achieving that particular goal.

THE AI INDUSTRY BECAME A DIRECT TARGET
AI services are not just tools for attackers; they are also valuable targets. In its September 2026 report, Anthropic described GTG-50020, a Russian-speaking financially motivated actor that turned from attacks on hotels and financial services to AI companies.
A critical step involved manipulating an AI provider's automated evaluation environment. Malicious instructions caused the environment to disclose production API keys associated with several services. These were credentials held in a customer environment, not evidence that Anthropic's own systems were breached.
THIRTY TARGETS IN FOUR DAYS
Anthropic reports that infrastructure associated with the actor launched attacks against approximately 30 AI companies over about four days. A working technique could be reused against additional targets. Not every attempt succeeded. The actor also sought access to an unreleased Claude model, but the investigation says that objective was not achieved.
The campaign used parallel agents for scanning websites, evaluating potential vulnerabilities and organizing follow-up activity. A human operator still selected targets and decided what to pursue.
WHY API KEYS ARE SO SENSITIVE
A production key is more than a configuration string. It may authorize paid model calls, access to application services or handling of confidential data. Testing environments become dangerous when they contain real production credentials or unrestricted outbound network access.
THE PROMPT ANALYSIS
As AI products spread, the surrounding ecosystem becomes an attack surface: integration platforms, evaluation tools, proxy services and autonomous agents. The most effective defenses include short-lived keys, isolated test systems, narrow scopes and rapid revocation of exposed credentials.
